What is Traceroute?

Traceroute is a network diagnostic utility that maps the complete journey taken by packets across intermediate routers (hops) to reach their destination.

How Does Traceroute Work?

Traceroute leverages the TTL (Time To Live) IP header field. By sending packets with incrementally increasing TTL values (1, 2, 3...), each intermediate router returns an ICMP Time Exceeded message, revealing its identity and round-trip delay.
